Eliminating the Problems with Legacy 3D Measurement Techniques

FARO CREAFORM’s Tank Car Corrosion Inspection Solution

The corrosion mapping process in a tank car could take up to multiple days. Results are prone to human error, often lack repeatability and precision, and are challenging to communicate to various stakeholders, including welders, tank owners, and tank builders. That’s the problem FARO CREAFORM set out to solve—with 3D scanners.

Reliable Data. Better Decision-making.

We believe every inspection deserves clear, reliable, and easy‑to‑understand data—even for teams who have never used 3D scanners before. Our solutions allow shops to return assets to service faster, with greater confidence and far less interpretation.

3D Scanners: Like a Virtual Pit Gauge

To extract usable information from the digitized surface, FARO CREAFORM drew inspiration from how people manually inspect external corrosion and developed a digital algorithm that mimics the deepest point extraction of a pit gauge. How? By digitally identifying the highest points around a damaged area and then measures the distance from the surface to the created line.

FARO CREAFORM’s ROI Speaks for Itself

FARO CREAFORM 3D scanning solutions also address a wide range of other maintenance and inspection applications, such as mechanical damage assessments (dents), dimensional measurements (ovality, bending), first article measurements and retro‑engineering or retro‑fit applications.

3D Scanning: The New Technology Standard in 3D Corrosion Inspections

FARO CREAFORM has been providing 3D scanner‑based corrosion assessment solutions for over 15 years. We have sold over 1,000 systems and serve more than 300 clients worldwide. Our solution has become a standard for infrastructure inspections among major pipeline operators, power plants and refinery owners. It is a trusted industry solution worldwide.
