Scan Life, Van Life: How 3D Scanning is Revolutionizing Custom Interiors

3dinfo2

Mitch Yaggie, a van upfitter based in Flagstaff, AZ, contacted Rapid3D with an inquiry regarding the specific differences between our "Scan Packages" and "Model Packs," particularly in relation to their compatibility with Autodesk Fusion 360. Redpoint Conversions focuses on customizing and modifying van interiors, and they were evaluating the suitability of the van data products for the design and fabrication workflow.

In response to Mitch's inquiry, the Rapid3D team clarified the distinctions between the two offerings.

The "Scan Package" delivers raw scan data in STL format, a common file type produced by the Creaform 3D scanners that Rapid3D uses. These packages include high- and low-resolution meshes of both the interior and exterior of the vehicle body. The provided scans are segmented—meaning they are divided into smaller sections—and aligned for ease of use. This raw data can be imported into CAD software like Fusion 360, but it may require additional processing and manipulation to be suitable for design purposes. Specialized scan-to-CAD modeling software, like Geomagic Design X, Scan-to-CAD Pro from Creaform, or other programs are the best way to work with the STL data.

On the other hand, "Model Packs” include the scan data but also add a surface CAD model of the vehicle's rear cargo area. This model, provided in STEP format, is another widely used format for 3D data exchange, and is designed in an "as-built" fashion, accurately representing the actual dimensions and features of the cargo space within manufacturing tolerances. The inclusion of this CAD model streamlines the design process, as it provides a ready-to-use 3D representation of the area that upfitters are most likely to modify in any CAD software.

By offering both "Scan Packages" and "Model Packs," Rapid3D caters to a range of user needs and skill levels. The "Scan Packages" provide a cost-effective option for those who are comfortable working with raw scan data and have the expertise to manipulate it in their design software. The "Model Packs," with their inclusion of a pre-built CAD model, are geared towards those who value convenience and a faster design workflow.

Mitch received a scan sample file and a step-by-step guide on using STL files in Fusion 360 to create CAD models. The guide demonstrates how to create a floor pan using Fusion 360 and scan data without the need for manual, traditional measurements. It provides instructions on importing mesh files, creating sections, generating sketches, extruding profiles, and offsetting planes.

Mitch ended up using the scan data-only package in Fusion 360 to build out the customized interior for the 2022 Sprinter 170 Extended High Roof van. After the custom design was done, the interior was fabricated and installed for a beautifully customized interior. Check out his incredibly impressive build below!
